Three different Bluetooth standards are in play and they are not interchangeable. Auracast is the one that will matter most over the next few years, and every current platform we fit is built for it.
Hearing aids with Bluetooth stopped being a premium feature some time ago. What has not settled is which devices pair with what. That is where people get caught out. A hearing aid that streams beautifully from an iPhone may need a different arrangement for a work laptop, and the phrase “Bluetooth enabled” covers at least three different things. This page sorts out which is which.
What Bluetooth Does in a Hearing Aid
Four things, and they arrived at different times.
- Audio streaming. Music, podcasts, calls and television audio go straight into your hearing aids instead of into the room.
- Hands-free calling. Microphones in the hearing aids pick up your voice, so the phone can stay in your pocket.
- App control. Volume, programs and fine adjustments from your phone.
- Broadcast reception. Auracast lets a venue send audio to any number of listening devices at once. This is the newest and the one still rolling out.
Only the last of those is new. The first three have been standard on premium hearing aids for several years, which is worth knowing before anyone tries to sell them to you as an upgrade.
Some wider context. About 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids, according to NIDCD research. Connectivity is one of the more common reasons the ones who do act finally do.
The Three Kinds of Bluetooth You Will See
The word Bluetooth on a spec sheet can mean any of these, and the difference decides what your hearing aids will connect to.

If an unusual device has to connect, say so at your fitting and have it tested rather than assumed.
Hearing Aids With Bluetooth on iPhone, Android and Everything Else
This is where most of the confusion sits, so here it is plainly.
- iPhone. Every model above pairs directly for streaming and calls. Nothing extra is needed.
- Android. The same, though the exact features can depend on your phone’s Android version and hardware. Bring your actual phone to the fitting.
- Laptops and tablets. This is where universal pairing earns its keep. A device that only speaks the newest standards may not connect to an older work machine.
- Televisions. Usually a small transmitter that plugs into the television and sends audio to the hearing aids. It is a separate accessory on every brand we carry.
Bring every device you want to connect to your appointment, or a list of them. Pairing them in the room takes minutes and saves a return visit.
What Streaming Does to Your Battery
Streaming costs battery on every pair of hearing aids with Bluetooth, and published figures assume you are not doing it all day.

If you stream several hours a day, read the second half of those cells rather than the first. A device that runs 51 hours quietly may run a third of that with heavy streaming, and that is the number that decides whether you make it to bedtime.
When Pairing Goes Wrong
Four problems account for most of it, and none of them means the hearing aids are faulty.
- The connection drops in the same spot every time. Usually interference or distance. Keep the phone on the same side of your body and out of a back pocket.
- Only one hearing aid streams. Usually a partial pairing. Remove both from the phone’s Bluetooth list and pair again from scratch.
- It worked, then stopped after a phone update. Common, and usually fixed by re-pairing. Worth a call before you assume a repair.
- Calls sound fine to you and poor to them. That is the outgoing microphone path, and it is a setting your provider can adjust.

What Bluetooth Does Not Solve
Worth saying, because connectivity is where hearing aids are easiest to oversell.
- Streaming is not the same as hearing better in a room. Audio piped directly in is always clearer than audio crossing a noisy space. That is physics, not processing.
- Auracast depends on the venue, not on your hearing aids. Being ready for it does not create places that broadcast.
- Bluetooth does nothing for speech in noise. That is a separate problem solved by different hardware, and hearing aids and speech in noise covers it.
